Author Interview - Corvina Sweeney
The following interview is with Corvina Sweeney. A Louisiana native, her horror stories embody southern horror.
Tell us who you are. Corvina Sweeney.
What are you currently working on? Can you tell us a bit about it? The Coven 2. In this hilarious sequel to The Coven, the absurd comedy continues with more Kevin and more chaos for the witches at the Pritchard house.
What is most difficult about building your brand? The most difficult part of building any brand is marketing.
Where do you draw your inspiration from? I draw most of the inspiration from my books from real life situations that take place around me, whether that’s actual events that have happened or simply the people around me. I’ve even been known to take inspiration from something as simple as a short phone conversation or text message.
How do you make time to for personal projects around your other commitments? Everything in my life revolves around time management and fluid schedules. While I don’t have set times to write, I do make sure that I set time aside every day to write.
What do you need in your workspace? In my workspace I need one cup of coffee, a can or two of coke, and plenty of snacks. I also need a somewhat clutter free workspace.
What piece of horror has been the most inspirational for you as a horror author? I don’t think there really is one piece of horror I could narrow down, as horror in itself is so vast and I love all of it. However, if I had to narrow it down, I’d have to say it’s the dark side of reality and the what if’s of everyday life.
What has been the most difficult scene you’ve written? Why was it difficult? The most difficult scene for me to write was a sex scene in Temptress of Weinberger Road. Writing that particular scene was difficult due to wording. I didn’t want it to sound too formal nor did I want it to sound like a scene from a cheesy romance novel. I also didn’t want it to sound like pure smut. So, finding that right balance in the wording was rather challenging.
Have you ever written something that changed the way you think about the world? No.
What advice would you give to others? For the writers out there, keep writing and don’t stop. For everyone in general, Always look for the positive even if it seems like there isn’t one; I assure you it’s there in the most unlikely of places.
Do you have any other talents or hobbies? Tell us about yourself! I am a wealth of somewhat useless knowledge. I am also a self-taught herbalist of the mad scientist variety. I enjoy scuba diving and snorkeling, canning food I’ll probably never get around to eating, gardening, making my own bread from scratch, and befriending every animal I come across, including local wildlife.
How do you develop your characters? Are any of them based on people you know? Character development for me is somewhat easy. I start with a story idea and the story dictates who the characters are. With books like The Coven, Having Sam for Dinner, and Temptress of Weinberger Road, the characters are based on people I’m close with in my life. Other times the characters are simply dictated by the story as we see in Gravemoor Radio.
What is your dream project you hope to complete? I guess like most authors, I want to one day write that one book or series that turns my brand into a household name.
