As much as authors like to pretend they are isolationists, we don’t succeed that way. A major part of being an author is supporting other authors. For the most part, this is pretty simple. Authors are readers, and we support other authors by reading their works. But with all the modern technology, there is also the problem of trying to establish yourself to be seen among expanse the internet has become. To assist the author, and spread your awareness of other authors, I reached out to Jose Trevino, the author of FEAR. He is also a Dark Veil Society author.
Tell us who "Jose Trevino" is.
I’m a Mexican/American horror and dark fantasy writer. My full name is what I use in my books and since I’m Mexican, I also use my mother’s maiden name for a second last name. I’m physically disabled, diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at 4 years old. I’ve always loved stories but I never imagined I’d be writing as a career.
What are you currently working on? Can you tell us a bit about it?
Currently I’m finishing up the final self-editing draft for a dark urban fantasy. The premise is a young man discovers magic by seemingly bad luck and gets tangled in a huge mess as he’s trying to figure out who’s trying to kill him, why, and how to control magic. It’s the first book of a planned trilogy.
What is most difficult about building your brand?
Honestly? I still don’t know. Probably marketing.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Everything can be an inspiration. Most of my ideas come from two places. The first is from random dark thoughts or intrusive thoughts. I entertain them enough to develop a loose story. The second, nightmares. I’m a lucid dreamer so I remember all my dreams and nightmares with great detail.
How do you make time to for personal projects around your other commitments?
What most people don’t understand or don’t know is that in order to reach a goal you need to make sacrifices. The bigger the goal the bigger the sacrifice. So, I don’t veer much from the narrow path I know I need to walk in order to reach my goal. Only the real important commitments can keep me from working.
What do you need in your workspace?
A good pair of headphones, banging playlist, and my tablet. The rest is up to me.
What advice would you give to others?
Whatever it is you want to achieve, quit putting it off for when you’ll feel ready. You’ll never feel ready. Just start now. Forget about how much you’ll need to do. Start small, be consistent, and be patient.
Do you have any other talents or hobbies? Tell us about yourself!
Yes actually. I’m a pretty good illustrator. I was going to dedicate my life to that, but I lost movement in my arms. I’m really good at math and physics.
How do you develop your characters? Are any of them based on people you know?
It depends on the character. If it’s a protagonist, I usually have an idea or quality about them. I’m a pantser so I just let most of my characters develop themselves. And yes, some characters are loosely based on people I know or partially on me. One character is about 100% someone very close to me. In my horror anthology FEAR, the last story mentions and briefly features a character named Emily. She’s exactly as described.
What is your dream project you hope to complete?
I really hope to work with my biggest idol, Guillermo Del Toro. To me, that man can do no wrong. I’d specifically want to either help him write a movie or co create a graphic novel with him like his work on THE STRAIN.
